For example, ALPR systems are used in parking lots or other areas to provide vehicle surveillance or to aid parking attendants. A typical ALPR system includes an optical scanner that reads the characters or numbers on the license plate, a computer that stores the data from the optical scanner and associates the data with the license plate, and an output device that displays the data for the license plate. The ALPR system can also be used to provide other information such as the city, state, and/or name of the city or state associated with the license plate.
The optical scanner typically includes an illumination source that shines light onto the license plate and a camera that receives light reflected off the license plate and generates an image of the license plate. The camera is coupled to an electronic image processor that digitizes the image to generate data that can be associated with the license plate. For example, the electronic image processor includes a computer-readable memory that stores an image or a series of images of the license plate. The memory stores the data for each image so that the computer can identify the license plate and record the data. The computer can read the data from the memory and compare the data to a database of data to determine the make and model of the vehicle associated with the license plate.
To recognize an entire license plate, the optical scanner moves the vehicle to which the license plate is attached past the optical scanner. For example, a vehicle having a large number of license plates can be driven through the optical scanner multiple times. While this scanning approach may ensure that the license plate is fully detected, it also increases the time and effort required to identify the license plate. Furthermore, the time and effort required to identify the license plate increases as the size of the database of data increases. Moreover, the use of a large database increases the time required to identify a license plate, which typically requires searching the database to identify the license plate.
In view of the foregoing, there is a need for a system that detects license plates in a more efficient manner.Q:
